Philosophy Statement
My teaching philosophy is one that's based on the belief that in order to be a successful teacher you have to engage and make a connection with the students. Once the connection has been made it is up to the teacher to present the material in a matter which its enlightens the student. With experience teaching in United School District 259 (as well as teaching abroad in Japan) I not only bring my traditional experience of teaching in the states but also the best practices from another culture.
Students of today's generation are a lot different then students from ten years ago. The advancement of technology for example causes a much shorter span of attention. From my observations teachers who don't connect with students not only lost the trust of the students, they also may potentially have behavior problems later with the same students. Therefore finding common ground and interest is one of the most important things a teacher can do to create a successful learning environment.
First and foremost a teacher needs to know and enjoy the material they'll be teaching. When the material is second nature to the teacher it gives an opportunity to adjust the lessons to fit a variety of learners. Each classroom presents a wide range of learning styles and various levels so the goal is not only to prepare the students to meet the core requirements, but also go above and beyond those levels. Teachers also need to have a good working knowledge of today's technology to incorporate into the lesson planning, and engage those students who gather much of their information from it.
The next important key is creating a classroom environment that students look forward to participate in. Everyone from teachers to administrators can recall that one teacher that made them look forward to attending class everyday. They looked forward to that time because the teacher not only created a great environment to learn in, they were also someone they could confide in. The students not only look up to the teacher they have trust in them. They are not afraid to open up, they feeling comfortable talking about class subjects and other areas of interest that they know the teacher has experience in.
My teaching style is one of immersing with the students and the materials not just lecturing to them but engaging them. Giving them a worldview and letting the students know that school is a stepping-stone to achieving their dreams regardless of what they are. I was one of the highest requested substitute teachers in USD 259 for the simple reason, engaging the students and earning their respect. Not only did they hear my voice I gave them one as well and created a learning environment where learning was fun and hard work is something they “want” to do not because they have to. With parents sometimes less involved in the learning process of their children it's evening more important for a teacher to be a educator, role model and friend to ensure all students have the attention and tools to successfully complete the course.
